Opening for Violist and Cellist

About Semiosis Quartet:

Semiosis Quartet, Inc. is a Boston based 501c3 nonprofit organization, whose mission is to collaboratively create experiences for the public that challenge perceived norms in classical music and promote conversation and reflection along with finding new ways to engage with learners of all ages. Semiosis Quartet commits to collaborating with artists and programming repertoire that promotes voices of people from diverse ethnicities, nationalities, gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, compositional styles, and more. We pride ourselves on giving life to pieces that are often ignored or undervalued in other "classical" ensembles, primarily consisting of music by living composers. We strive to build community around our performances and educational endeavors, and we want to be positive members of the contemporary music community, the music community as a whole, and our local communities.

Description:

Semiosis Quartet is looking for a violist and cellist to join us for the 2024 season and beyond. Typical seasons involve 4-5 self-produced programs per season, each of which having 2-3 performances in and around Boston. A set weekly rehearsal schedule is preferred, but we understand the need for flexibility with freelance musicians. “Hired” projects are taken on based on availability and occasionally require travel. We frequently work directly with individual composers and composition departments at college and universities to workshop, record, and perform new works. We are in the planning stages of studio recordings, tours, and more.

Members of the quartet are active board members and have input in all operations and repertoire decisions. Specific administrative and board tasks can be assigned based on individual strengths.

Qualifications:

We are looking for someone who aligns with the values and goals of the quartet. Applicants should:

  • Demonstrate a career as a performing musician with a passion for contemporary music

  • Have a degree (MM preferred) in music

  • Have interest in/experience with music written by a diverse range of composers

  • Be a collaborative team member who communicates effectively in and out of rehearsals

  • Be willing to engage with audience members in non-traditional ways to build community

  • Demonstrate experience and enthusiasm for education

  • Be willing to help with administrative and fundraising tasks potentially including grant writing, repertoire selection, booking venues, etc.

Compensation:

Compensation is offered on per-project basis:

  • Self-produced programs have a $400 stipend plus $50 per additional performance after the first two

  • Income from “hired” or Educational projects will be split 5 ways, with 20% going to each quartet member, and 20% going to the general operations fund for the quartet

If interested, please send a Resume or CV plus one or more audio or video recordings to info@semiosisquartet.com by February 15th.

Thank you,

Nicole Parks and Madeline Hocking
