Semiosis Quartet with percussionist Joseph VanHassel

  • Makeshift Boston 549 Columbus Ave Boston, MA 02118 (map)

Featuring performances by Boston’s Semiosis Quartet and North Carolina percussionist Joseph Van Hassel. A part of the Boston New Music Festival. (www.bostonnewmusicfestival.org)

Joseph Van Hassel will be playing a program of newly commissioned works for vibraphone and electronics, including the world premiere of "Fracture" by Boston composer Dan VanHassel, as well as new commissions by Mara Helmuth, Drew Krause, and additional pieces by David Macbride and Takayoshi Yoshioka. "Fracture" is a new piece for vibraphone and live electronics inspired by DJs and remix culture. The vibraphone is used simultaneously as an acoustic instrument and a controller for the playback of short samples re-purposed from commercial recordings. Custom software will track and process the playing of the vibraphonist to create a multifaceted relationship between the acoustic sound of the instrument, the sample playback, and live digital processing of the vibraphone.

Semiosis Quartet will perform:

Ommagio a Gesualdo - Eric Nathan
…the clock is ticking… - Hong-Da Chin
Sivunittinni - Tanya Tagaq (arr. Jacob Garchik)
Death valley Junction - Missy Mazzoli
